Urban regions are economically viable if they provide space for people's flows, knowledge, and goods. These characteristics are grounded in our proposal. They contribute to the new urban economy.
For the Cartesius area, a former rail maintenance depot, our team envisioned a new, progressive green city district, right in the centre of Utrecht. Green living, health, a flowing economy, and sustainability are the focal points of the district. Various solutions concerning energy, waste, and sustainability have been integrated into the masterplan.
The heart of the plan is a green and diverse park/garden zone. Within the urban blocks lining the central green, public spaces have been materialised in a rich and diverse manner, creating different atmospheres within the plan. A subtle grain running through the building volumes generates various informal spaces throughout, both in plan and section.

A range of typologies is proposed.
From compact studios with shared services to royal apartments with large outside spaces. But also four layer citydwellings and maisonnettes with large terraces located at the park side. This mix of housing types will create a mixed neighborhood and will allow habitants to switch livings within their own neighborhood.
